Some people might balk at this, but I get asked this question all the time. Can you eat dairy goats? Sure, you can eat dairy goats. I don’t always eat my goats but when I do butcher or have someone butcher (I have done both), I will eat my wethers. Rule #1 when raising any animal for slaughter is don’t name them. When I was a kid, my parents used to get a milk calf and raise it up for meat. I named “T-bone” innocently and trained him to lead with a halter and follow me around the pasture. Some friends came over and we even road him. Then one day I came home and there was no more “T-Bone” just a pool of dried blood where the butcher and dispatched him. Do not name the food, treat them with respect and honor. When the time comes, if you can do the slaughtering great but if not find a good butcher and take them when the time comes.
Goat meat is healthy, lean meat. Knowing how your animals were raised is a great way to show respect to your food.
